Eligibility Requirements. Persons that are eligible for benefits under the basic hospital insurance policy are: (1) those who have attained age 65 and also have worked of sufficient length to become insured under social security or the railroad retirement system or those people who are entitled to monthly social security or railroad retirement benefits; (2) persons under 65 who’ve been eligible for social security disability benefits for 24 months; (3) a widow, age 50 or older, who is entitled to a mother’s benefit or who’d happen to be entitled to a widow’s benefit by reason of disability if she had filed; and (4) persons, no matter age, if there is a need for maintenance dialysis or perhaps a kidney transplant due to permanent kidney failure if insured or receiving monthly benefits under social security or the railroad retirement system.

The basic benefit period which measures using hospital services is for 3 months. In addition, there are 60 reserve days that can be used when the patient is hospitalized for more than 3 months. Reserve days are not renewable. That’s, when a reserve day has been used it’s not given back. However, once the insured continues to be from a medical facility or other facility providing skilled nursing or rehabilitation services for 60 consecutive days, a brand new benefit period begins upon readmission to some hospital.
